  • If you dig deep into the District Council website, you can find some stuff on St Georges Day (this Thursday).
  • The council has previously offered a free celebration pack to non-profit making organisations. The pack contains flag, bunting, balloons and
    table decorations.
  • The Chairman of the Council, Jim Grey will be touring the district on Thursday, ‘dropping in to celebrate with local groups’.
  • Here’s a few upcoming events:

  • Great Wakering Village Memorial Hall – Saturday 25th April 10.00am ? 12.30pm Coffee Morning – ‘Celebrating with local residents.’
  • Rayleigh Royal British Legion – St George?s Day Theme night Saturday 25 April. ‘Rayleigh Royal British Legion are celebrating with a disco,
dragons and St George himself, loads of fun guaranteed.’ For information telephone 01268 776503
  • Rayleigh Library – Sunday 26th April 2pm.- ‘Celebrate St.George at Rayleigh Library 4-8 Year olds are welcome at our Storytime of Gorgeous George and the Dirty Dragon’

  • Rochford council are really pushing the boat out for St Georges day…Not! Perhaps the council tax money they gave away to East of England regional Assembly(£11,300) would have been better spent funding a much needed morale booster to the good people of Rochford?

  • There’s a willingness in the council to celebrate the day. If people came up with really good ideas I don’t think there would be a funding problem. The council doesn’t have a huge number of staff, so actually handling big events may be more of a problem. It would be better if local groups arranged events themselves and got council assistance.

I can think of some things that could be done on the day – a St George’s Day business breakfast, a Shakespeare play at the Mill, but they wouldn’t exactly provide a huge morale booster for the population in general.

    What would you suggest Geoff?

  • Rayleigh Town Council are having a photo shoot with some children for St Georges day as one of my sons is being taken out of School for it.
Maybe a good gesture would be free parking to celebrate throughout the district as this would make the hard pushed businesses and the customers feel better for the day and hopefully boost business.
We could all feel like St George that we had slayed a big unpopular dragon.(Massivly inflated parking charges)

  • Martin, How about instead of slaying a dragon get a blacksmith to meltdown some wheel clamps and recycle them into something that benefits the residents of the Rochford District.
