Earlier in the week we wrote about the number of local people without qualifications..
We now have some more information – but this time, based on Rochford District as a whole, not on parliamentary constituencies.
These figures are all for adults aged between 16 and 64, for the year 2010:
Qualifications
These figures are a bit depressing…
The percentage of people without qualifications is 15.3 % – worse than the national average of 11.3 %.
We also have a lot fewer people with university degrees or their equivalent -20.5 % compared with the national figure of 31.3 %.
Employment
These figures are a bit encouraging….
The percentage of people actually in work is 77.8 % – better than the national average is 70.3 %
The percentage of people who are self-employed is 13.2 % – higher than the national average of 9.1 %
The percentage of people who are “Managers and senior officials” is rather high at 16.7 % (national average is only 15.7 %)
Earnings
These figures are a bit surprising
First of all, average (median) weekly earnings of people living in our district are above the national average- ?525.60 per week compared with ?501.80 for Britain as a whole.
Interestingly, average (median ) earnings for women who live in our district are higher than for men – ?531.20 for women, ?519.50 for men.
But earnings for people who have their workplace in our district are a lot lower. Average earnings are ?440.10 – and men do a lot better than women – average male earnings are ?479.20, average earnings for women are only ?388.00.
So what can we deduce from this? Well, quite a lot of our adult population left school without qualifications, but have still found jobs and careers. And we have quite a lot of people -especially women – who commute out of the district, are probably managers or senior officials and have decent salaries. But people who work locally receive much lower earnings….
