We’ve had the following helpful email from onlinefocus reader Chris Stanley:

Did you know you could get ?34 from your water company by filling in a simple form

Like so many , my water bill arrived on my doorstep the other day and reading through the leaflet I noticed that you could apply to the water company for a Surface Water Drainage Rebate to reduce the charge are charged to the property of ?34.This charge is taken on the basis of rain water from your property drains into the sewer. If your rain water drains into a soakaway in your garden you could apply for a reduction in the charge by phoning your company. I am sure that many of you could benefit from this.

Thanks for pointing this out, Chris. The Essex Water booklet says:

“Sewerage services charges include the cost of disposal of
rainwater from your premises.
If you think that the rainwater from your property does
not drain to the public sewer, please call the relevant
company below and ask for details of their surface water
drainage rebate.

  • My thanks to Chris Stanley for pointing this out, I am now £35 better off. You can download an application form from the Anglia Water web site and the request is dealt with within a two weeks.
