Favourite Places?

Labour campaigner Julian Ware Lane has momentarily put politics to one side to write about 10 things he loves about the Southend area:

1. The Pier
2. Belfairs Woods
3. Old Leigh
4. Westcliff Promenade
5. Wakering Stairs
6. Hadleigh Castle
7. Central Library
8. Shoeburyness
9. Southchurch Hall
10 Stambridge Beach

Any thoughts on a similar list for favourite places around the Rochford District? You can suggest just one or two places, or have a list of ten if you want – preferably with a couple of sentences of explanation for each. They should all be within our district, or just outside our borders.

So suggestions please !

  • So Mr Julian Ware-Lane has annexed Wakering Stairs for Southend eh? I can understand his likings but he had better not let that become well known to many of the villagers of the wonderful Parish of Great Wakering in the equally wonderful District of ROCHFORD, which is totally independent of Southend! Although the Parishioners of Great Wakering generally welcome visitors, he may otherwise receive a rather warmer reception than that he bargained for, perhaps too hot for his comfort, next time he visits us.
I don’t suppose the residents of Stambridge, also in ROCHFORD District, or Hadleigh in the Borough of CASTLE POINT, will feel much different about their annexation either.
I’m almost surprised he has not also included Windsor Castle in his list of Southend’s attractions!

  • To be fair to Julian, he’s not saying that these places are within Southend’s Local Government borders – But many people would regard them as being ‘in the Southend area’ . In fact he used the phrase “my corner of the Land of East Saxons ”

Sometimes it’s pleasant just to celebrate some of the good places around here, without grinding a party political axe….
