Congratulations to Chelmsford on gaining city status.
We’re not sure if this means that the settlement of Chelmsford is now a city, or whether the city status covers the entire borough , in which case the “city limits” will be at Battlesbridge:
Anyway, Essex now has a capital city instead of a county town.
We expect that the ancient Saxon Kings of the Kingdom of Essex would be very pleased….
Do town councillors get a pay rise when they become city councillors? 😉
There’s no particular reason for a pay rise….
Good for Chelmsford – I think or Will the Residents have to pay more for all the posh new City signs that they will need to put up 😉
Probably really silly but I thought that Colcester was a city and that Chelmsford was the county town of Essex.
Strange.
Well done Chelmsford.
Jane
PS Obviously Geography is not my strong spot but I’m interested:
Can a City be a county town?
Thanks Chris for the congrats.
No, ST1. Most Councillors receive fairly small allowances.
Stephen
It was a tongue in cheek comment drawn from press coverage of certain national and county representatives.
I like Chelmsford, so congratulations on the award.
Jane, Colchester was a Roman city , but is treated as a town nowadays (albeit England’s Oldest Town). It’s all very confusing…
I suppose you can still call Chelmsford a county town, but I would prefer to call it Essex’s Capital City. I mean, hey, we were an independent kingdom hundreds of years before, say, the Scottish kingdom existed. (not that I want to see Essex as an independent country!)
Colchester is Britain’s first city, founded in AD49. It is still a city, but calls istelf a town.
