Safety visits to reassure high-rise residents

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service has committed to visiting all high-rise residential buildings in Essex following the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower, London, last week.

Teams of firefighters, community officers and volunteers will be visiting all 270 high-rise buildings in Essex, starting with the tallest properties (over 10 floors).

The fire service will be visiting the residents and giving reassurance and fire safety advice. The Service’s Technical Fire Safety team will also be visiting the buildings to check their fire risk assessments.

Acting Chief Fire Officer Adam Eckley said:

“In response to the devastating fire at Grenfell Tower we have committed to visiting all the high-rise blocks of flats in Essex over the coming weeks. We understand that residents are feeling vulnerable and scared and we want to do everything we can to make them feel safe in their homes.

“We have organised dozens of teams across Essex consisting of firefighters, community safety teams and volunteers to visit every single high-rise block of flats. The teams will talk to the residents and give them reassurance and safety advice and also answer any specific fire safety concerns they have.

“I want to reassure the high-rise residents of Essex that as a fire service we will be doing everything we can to make them feel safer in their homes. We have pulled together all of our resources to reach as many residents in as short a time possible.

“I would also like to remind everyone living in Essex we also can carry out individual home safety visits, no matter where you live in Essex. We will visit your home and give you safety advice and check you smoke all completely free of charge. To book a visit please call: 0300 303 0088 or book online: www.essex-fire.gov.uk/book.
