If people were weary of seeing photos of Cllr Black’s shoe in a pothole – here’s instead one of Mrs Black’s trainer in a pothole :

It’s been reported on FixMyStreet tonight:

Pothole in Poplar Road

Reported in the Potholes category by Elena Black at 22:12 today

It is on the right hand side of the road when driving in drom Eastwood Road

This is getting deep and will affect suspensions , vehicles often can’t avoid it due to a car parked on the other side of the road. It needs repairing soon.

  • Thank you Elena. Already reported and have the ref number as have probably all the pot holes in Rayleigh Central Ward. It is my pet hate too at the moment.

  • One area that is bad is by the Lavers opposite Edward Francis school. Holes here are deep 2 or 3 shoes and at least 3 wide. Not sure which ward they are in. Must have been reported by now but really need doing.Should there be a standard shoe size for hole measurement?

  • Hi Bruce. Like myself Dave Sperring is on top of the pot hole situation in Trinity Ward and I know Mark Francois is also insisting that this one is sorted out sooner rather than later.

  • Thanks for your comments Cheryl. But I’m afraid they only emphasise the poor state of affairs with the County Council.

If you go back a few years, district and parish councillors never had to run around like this reporting potholes! There were hardly any potholes to be seen – and if one or two appeared, they got fixed ! As evidence – try searching for ‘pothole’ on onlinefocus – the word wasn’t mentioned once between 2003 and August 2007 – since then we’ve using the word loads of times.

Things seemed to go wrong after a change in County Council policy in January 2008: https://www.onlinefocus.org/?p=982

And now you say our Member of Parliament is getting involved to get a pothole fixed? This is absurd. No disrespect to Mark, but he has more important duties to fulfil.

  • Chris

Could not agree more. Highways is in this situation and we have to deal with it as District and Town Cllrs sadly. As you are aware though I am not one to blame, I just get on with my responsibilities as a Cllr and if it means I keep having to nag Essex Highways as I do, then that is what will happen. Afterall we all want our residents to be happy. It is also our duty as Cllrs to work with other Authorities and not continiousuy moan. Something we see, they may not necessarily see.

Anyway enough about potholes the issues within Rayleigh Central and Trinity Wards are well in hand. As you have said many times that is the beauty of living in the ward.

  • Our County Councillor is strangely silent on this.Perhaps he is too busy with the olympics!
By the way Cheryl does “well in hand” mean that something is actually going to happen?

  • And that Ladies & Gentlemen raises the issue of just why 62% of Labour candidates standing in Rochford’s upcoming Local Election do not live in the Ward they are standing in. Worst examples include Oliver Graham St John Ware-Lane who lives in Rochford but is standing in Wheatley Ward, Rayleigh whilst Myra Anne Weir resides in Hockley but is standing in Foulness & Great Wakering. I trust their satnavs will help them find their way to those Wards.
I wonder what percentage of Liberal Democrat candidates standing in this election live in the Ward they are standing in? Perhaps answers in A LITTLE round number percentage will be close enough!

  • We have five candidates standing in Rayleigh wards this year.
    All five live in Rayleigh.

Two live in the actual wards.
One lives only about 150 feet from their ward.
Two live only about half a mile away from their wards

We all put our home addresses on our leaflets.

    None of us need Satnavs.

  • Has any one had a walk up and down Queens Road in Rayleigh lately? The half approached via the Eastwood Road had several pot hole repaired in the last month but the half further down by Parklands Avenue (via Bull Lane) hasn’t been touched. I think I live on a road of two halves! What did we do at the Parklands end to deserve such a poor service in comparison to our neighbours?

  • Hi Chris. I saw you parked opposite my house at the neglected end of the road (I was the first house you leafleted). Believe me, there’s a pot hole at our end big enough to fill in, add fish and just call it a pond!!

  • Yes sir. This is just ONE past Broadoak (the middle of the road ish). If you walk the road from end-to-end you’ll see the Eastwood Road end has been patched and repaired whilst the other end has been neglected. Talk about a Postcode lottery!

Although I notice at the cared for end of the road a house ‘in the twenties’ has been waiting to have a curbstone reinstated. It’s been sitting in their front garden for months awaiting attention.

  • Admin, it is quite plain that my earlier comment on candidates not standing in Wards they live in was referring to local election candidates for District Council Members only. Labour candidates are only 5 for 13 in the District. LibDem candidates are unfortunately 0 for 3, although their distances separating their home and their prospective Ward may be relatively little compared with those glaring examples I gave for Labour candidates, many of whom may well require satnavs.
