The Changing Of The Guard At County Highways

There’s quite a lot going on with County Highways at the moment:

  • A new contractor took over for all new County Highways work from April 1st
  • If you drive along the A13 to work, the words “Sadlers Farm” may strike a raw nerve. The congestion – especially in the evenings – is frankly dreadful.
  • County Councillor Tracey Chapman from Paglesham is stepping down from her role of being in charge of highways. (She will return to being just an ‘ordinary’ county councillor). She will be replaced by County Councillor Derrick Louis, from Witham. We have to say that having a new person in charge of highways from the other end of the county is not encouraging for us.
  • Incidentally, there has been a somewhat surprising clash in the press over the reason for Tracey Chapman giving up the highways role.

The normally very affable Mrs Chapman came along to a meeting of the Rochford District Council Review Committee last week and explained that she was stepping down for family reasons. This shouldn’t raise any eyebrows – being in charge of highways for one of the biggest counties in England could certainly cause problems for anyone’s family life.

However one of her fellow Conservatives – Castle Point Councillor Alf Partridge – told the Echo why he thought County Cllr Mrs Chapman had stepped down -and mentioned Sadlers Farm.

Cllr Mrs Chapman has responded in turn :

?I have never discussed why I am retiring with Alf Partridge, and he certainly knows nothing about the progression of the Sadlers Farm scheme.”

We try to abide by the code of conduct for councillors, so we won’t quote any more of the Echo article. But it’s worth a look.
