We had a comment a few days ago from one of our readers about the Rochford Sports Festival:
We were given this at school over a month ago. I rang Rayleigh Leisure Centre straight away to try and book 4 activities and they were ALL booked even though we had just received the brochure, I wonder how many activities are still available.
If this event is that popular perhaps they should consider doing it again for those unable to book the first time!
So we mentioned this last night at full council and were listened to seriously.
Maybe, just maybe, the council and Virgin Leisure will add more events…

Just by way of feedback if the council do decide to expand the sports festival:
Both last year and this year I rang as did “Downhall Resident” and was told most things were already booked (at Rayleigh Leisure). We did successfully get booked for one thing though last year. This year we had more success and got the last 2 places for table tennis and football!
However when we attended today there were only 6 people who showed up for table tennis (16 had booked)and my son was the only one who showed for the football this evening!!!
Our experience was similar last year…
It’s a sad reflection of society that when things are put on “free” people happily book and then don’t show up without bothering to let anyone know.
Perhaps the council and Virgin need to re think the booking system. The idea is brilliant but maybe it should just be show up on the day (first come first serve)? Or may be a refundable deposit? The staff seemed to think that attendance had been pretty similar for the other events. It would be interesting to see the figures as I guess some money was put in to the day but I’m not sure how many people actually attended to appreciate it?
N.B. to Downhall Resident: – If I were you I would risk it and show up tomorrow (sunday) -if todays attendance was anything to go by there will be spaces to fit you in!!
