Independent Rawreth Parish Councillor Lyn Hopkins was on BBC Look East last night diuring an item about flooding in Rawreth.

She rightly said ?The drainage in the area cannot take any more houses, let alone a thousand?.

Chris Black raised this at full District Council tonight – together with drainage problems in Rawreth Lane and Sweyne Park. The only response we got was that there had already been a bit of ditch work done along Watery Lane, and that a Rayleigh Conservative councillor’s house had recently been flooded upstairs……

  • I believe that much of the flooding in Watery Lane stems from both the Priory Chase and Laburnum Way estates. The water from Priory Chase flows northward along Trenders Avenue and the water from Laburnum Way flows northward along Cheshunt Drive. Both routes converge approximately 200 metres north of Rawreth Lane. The route from there is eastward, crossing Parkhurst Drive and then northward again, crossing McCalmont Drive. I am not sure of it’s path from there but it has to be towards Watery Lane.
The run off in the ditch from Priory Chase was at least 300 to 400 gallons per minute on Monday.
Any further development in Rawreth Lane will only add to the problems and make the situation worse.

  • Greenbelt I can confirm there are three brooks exiting Rayleigh Park Estate across the fields to watery lane and beeches road .I inspected the outfull from them into the main river on monday ,it was running well but full bore .The environment agency are in the process of removing vegetation from the brook alongside watery lane but I have been informed that one landowner has refused access to one lengh so it may have some bearing on the trouble .
