I’m working on a leaflet for the County Council elections – we’ll be announcing our candidates soon. There’s a bit of blank space left! Any suggestions on what to write about there? What do our readers think are the important local topics at the moment?
Hi Chris,
Suggestion for leaflet.
Something about the importance of casting a vote, & percentage turnouts at recent elections, both national & local. Our biggest enemy is APATHY!
People don’t bother to vote, & then do nothing but grumble about whoever is elected. Shame on them!
Development/overdevelopment of the area, the on-going pressure on green belt, roads, health, all services in fact, coupled with the apparent lack of co-ordinated thinking (no transport assessment, Watery Lane not being improved,) that sort of thing
The need to restore trust and confidence in County Council in the wake of Lord Hanningfield and the expenses issues. I think this is quite important as I do believe a lot of people are now feeling that “they’re all just doing it for what they can get out of it”. There needs to be some sort of reassurance that County Council will be open and transparent and that nothing similar will ever be allowed to happen again. That Councillors can and should be trusted and are working for the best interests of the community.
Thank you Christine. I am certainly mentioning development.
I think you are right about the trust issue, and I need to cover it, though its difficult to write about it in a leaflet without sounding preachy . Though one thing we have is onlinefocus, if people come here, they can see what we have been doing for 10 years.
We need to secure our fair share of the County Budget particularly in highways issues .Explanation of the arbitary distribution of hedge and verge cutting for example. I feel we have not had a good representation in South Essex for some time , with some notable exceptions .

That’s a good idea Janet, thanks.
Probably best for a later, ‘last-minute’ leaflet.
Hi Chris – good luck with that!
I have two topics
Development/overdevelopment of the area, the on-going pressure on green belt, roads, health, all services in fact, coupled with the apparent lack of co-ordinated thinking (no transport assessment, Watery Lane not being improved,) that sort of thing
