Roller Skating Centre Is Passed – Despite Warning Of “First Death”

Things got more than a touch emotive when the council were discussing the application last night for a roller skating centre in Purdey’s Way Rochford.

The noise problems seem to have been overcome but the ward councillors were still very unhappy. Councillor Keith Gordon moved refusal on the grounds of inadequate parking and unsustainable location (poor public transport and unsafe pavements and highways safety). He was supported by Cllr Gill Lucas-Gill.

However Cllr Jo McPherson came out fully in support of the proposal, saying it was needed. Chris Black said he had voted against last time because of the noise issue, but was now changing to support it .

When it became clear that it was likely to go through, Cllr Gordon asked for a recorded vote , so that the public could see “who is responsible for the first death”. However to get a recorded vote, a number of councillors need to stand to request one, and that didn’t happen.

So the proposal was passed overwhelmingly, with only the ward councillors (Gordon, Lucas-Gill and Cottis) voting against.
