Essex Lib Dem County Councillor Stephen Robinson has launched the following omline petition – you can sign it here. It says:

Essex Street Light review

I think Essex County Council should review switching off the street lights. ECC should consider new-style, low-energy LED lights, lights controlled by movement sensors and similar technology.

It would reassure the public, be a more effective lighting, save money and reduce CO2 emissions.

  • I am astounded that county council has gone ahead with switching off our much-needed street lights. To find the area around my house plunged into almost pitch black at midnight is worrying to say the least. The roads in some of the affected areas are full of potholes which are now much harder to see, aside from the now increased danger of running over cats and other animals due to decreased visibility.

The worst aspect is, of course, how this new “scheme” to save money actually “enables” burglars and muggers by providing the darkness they need to break into garages and homes. It’s obvious crime figures will increase. Allegedly the areas in which this scheme was trialled haven’t seen a “significant” increase in crime but when you speak to local residents you hear a different story.

I no longer feel safe in my own home let alone walking back there from an evening out with friends.

This is the first time I have ever written a complaint regarding council decisions – our lights need switching back to restore some feeling of safety in the community.
