The Food Standards Agency is currently showing three restaurants in Rochford District with a zero rating for food hygiene! This rating of 0 out of 5 means ” Urgent Improvement Necessary”
You can find them (and ratings for over 400 other businesses)here.
One of those with Nil Points was being really talked up at a function I attended this week. Suggest everyone checks this list out before you eat out!
Linda, did the name of the restaurant begin with B………….
Thanks for bringing this site to our attention.Worth an observation before making the reservation!
Oz. It might have been but check out how many other establishments only got a 1 rating = need for improvement as well!! No wonder food poisoning is so common. If you want take-away you can’t beat good old fish and chips you can actually see what it is.
Do people think its worth putting a link to the hygiene information in our right sidebar, so its easy to find in the future?
Admin, gets my vote ????
Fascinating reading .Bit of an eye opener. What is the criteria for nil points? Alarming results for The Anchor told the food is of high standard and high price ,so what is that all about .Should not these places be closed down until they reach a minimum standard ?
Oz @ 6 – done!
Admin, thanks. This is a cut and paste from the food standards web site, I don’t see why more info is not readily available, after all it’s the public who could be at risk. Why the secrecy ?
Can I get more detailed information about a particular business’s hygiene standards?
Yes. More detailed information will be included in the food safety officer’s inspection report. If you want to see this you could make a ‘Freedom of Information’ request to the local authority that carried out the inspection. You can find the local authority’s contact details by searching this website for the business and then clicking on the name of the business. Alternatively, you can search here for the local authority by entering the postcode for the business.
i did a freedom of information request for somewhere in Southend i wanted to know more about why they got their ratings – to judge if i wanted to eat there despite the rating. The points are gained in 3 categories – i cant remember them all, but one of them is ‘management’ – i was hoping for a detailed report on what the issues were, but all they sent was a points score for each of the 3 categories – which didn’t help much at all. I don’t know if you can access the full report if i submitted another request, but i decided i wasn’t that bothered and just wouldn’t eat there. I think i remember reading that even somewhere with a 0 rating isn’t of a standard to be shut down, but you wouldn’t want to eat there would you?…. I’m not sure a fish and chip shop is likely to be safer than anything else – it’s not like you can see bacteria or things that may cause food poisoning.
D. You could be right about fish and chips but you can see them cooked and the state of the equipment. Not much bacteria survives being thrown into boiling fat surely!
Interesting that one of the zero rated places was quite full on Sunday evening and another had take away orders going out for delivery on Saturday. Not sure therefore if people are interested in the ratings.
People probably dont know, more so than are not interested, i bet if you went round the tables in one of the places telling people as they are eating, they might lose their appetite..
Maybe Linda, but the bacteria could be on the utensils used to pick items up from trays, from the base of the hot cabinet where things are stored until served etc – think all types of establishment can be a risk if standards are not followed.
Bruce, I am sure people are interested but they are probably not aware, an establishment that receives a low marking is hardly going to publicise it. As I said before, perhaps No Sign is a Bad Sign…
I have just recieved the news that The Anchor has had its 5 star rating reinstated.Wonder why it was taken away in the first place?
