In May an audit from 2007 was submitted to police by Essex CC which indicated spending was not matched with receipts and the former leader was able to spend about ?5,200 each month without oversight.

Liberal Democrat Group Leader and Leader of the opposition on Essex CC , Cllr Tom Smith-Jones, said a full investigation into concerns raised over three years ago must publicly reveal possible misuse of council facilities including use of chauffeur driven cars and corporate credit cards.

Cllr Smith-Jones also said residents were entitled to know if the council had put in place appropriate measures to stop abuses ever happening again. He commented: ‘Justice must be done and seen to be done.’
