The Guardian reports tonight that Rochford District is top this year for recycling with a recycling, reuse and composting rate of 65.79%:

Rochford District council and South Oxfordshire district council topped the recycling league tables. The two councils came top with recycling, reuse and composting rates of 65.79% and 65.11% respectively, with Ashford borough council bottom of the rankings with a rate of just 14%. The average recycling rate for English councils was 41.2% between April 2010 and March 2011,

So ….

…… credit to the council as a whole for taking a cross-party attitude to recycling. This meant we ended up with a 3-bin system that every councillor could get behind, and it meant that a Lib Dem like Chris Lumley could play a role in drawing up the scheme.

(the only party that has knocked our scheme have been the English Democrats)

….. credit to former councillor Michael Starke who was the cabinet member for recycling at the start of the big scheme, and was very apologetic over problems during the initial launch. And credit also to the current cabinet member, Mike Steptoe.

…. definitely credit to our council officers for their day-to-work on this.

…… and most of all credit to the residents of our district for being so good at recycling – it’s good for the environment and good for council finances.

We’re not a swanky, fashionable district. We don’t have any cathedrals, universities or stately homes. But hey – we’re top.
