We’ve seen a nice recent? item on the Rochford District Community Archive .
It’s a copy of a newspaper report from 1882 on crime in the Rochford area…
- A butcher was neglecting his wife and children; his brothers agreed to pay 10 shillings (=50p) a week to support them and keep them out of the workhouse.
- A labourer on Canvey Island was fined 5 shillings for not sending his children to school.
- Zachariah Willshire was fined 10 shillings, plus 7 shillings costs, for being drunk on the highway.
- Most seriously,? William Carey , from Thundersley, was charged with threatening to kill his wife – and he was merely bound over to keep the peace.
