It does make you think. I wonder why it is not mandatory for the ratings to be displayed.
Having read this most enlightening food hygiene account, I would think that the most constructive remark i’v read, is by Councillor Julian Ware- Lane on this subject, who suggested that the food hygiene ratings should be displayed! What a good idea!
Surely this would result in a much needed clean up in some establishments, and install a sense of hygiene awareness into some staff and proprietors who seem sadly lacking!? Understanding food hygiene is very important , as a lack of it can cause severe illness or even fatalities,
Seems odd that premises like Bakers have to show their Food Hygiene certificate but restaurants don’t.
Maybe I have missed something but I thought that these ratings were already displayed, normally in the restaurant or café window. I know I have seen them in Rayleigh. Is it a case of no sign is a bad sign ?
In reply to The Mighty Oz the point you make in your response is a good one, ” “no sign is a bad sign”.
But the point is, At the moment it is not ‘obligatory’ to display any sign about a particular establishments hygiene rating, It should be ‘compulsory’
The sign should be ‘ uniform in it’s design’. and easy to recognise wherever you go to eat, throughout the country, The guesswork would therefore be iliminated ,
The ‘weak link’. would only come from the Authorities, who would have to regularly update the ‘compulsory’ certificates, Quite a challenge, when noting the number of food outlets across the country! But nevertheless, such a scheme is needed, and should be introduced.
Reply to the mighty Oz. you have got me thinking a little more about whether or not such hygiene signs are ‘already’ compulsory or not. Can we have clarity on this by someone, ‘ in the know’ ?
I will ask today…..
I checked – these signs are not compulsory.
