  • All crime is bad – I notice that there are 8 instances of violent crime. What constitutes a violent crime ? a couple of teens having a scrap ? some drunks having an argument or attacks on innocent people by yobs ?. Generally this feels a fairly safe area so it’s a worrying trend.

  • This is still a very safe town, well below the national average I believe, for all sorts of crime, however in the ten years I have lived in Rayleigh there has become a culture of watching who is around you, especially in certain parts of the town. Ten years ago there where no yobs shouting abuse on Rayleigh railway station and you could walk home from the station at any time of the day or night without worrying who was around. Drugs were less prevalent in the town centre pubs. I have witnessed and been a victim of anti-social behaviour several times during this time. In my view some young people,I stress not all young people, grow up with a lack of respect for other people and their possessions. Respect should be learnt from their parents, unfortunately some adults do not have respect, again I stress not all but some parents, I know some of these people and if this trend continues the kind of crime we are talking about now will pale into insignificance in another ten years. One last point, teachers in our schools have been stripped of the power to discipline our children and the same thing has happened with the ‘bobby’ on the street (when you see one).
