A Messy Subject

We’ve been contacted a couple of times recently by residents in the Downhall Park Way / Kelso Close area of Rayleigh about dog and horse poo.

As one resident put it

“There appears to be a very anti-social dog owner around DPW at the moment. Not to put too fine a point on it, it must be a big dog ‘ cos the poo’s are very big. They are all over the pavement, it’s disgusting.”

Kelso Close is affected by not only dogs, but also horses – because it is a legal route for horseriding.

We have contacted the District Council about this and a Streetscene Officer will be inspecting both roads and placing dog fouling stickers where appropriate.

Here’s a few thoughts:

  • If you own that big dog, please show some consideration to others.
  • We tried last year to get some more dog mess bins in the Downhall Park Way area but houseowners aren’t generally keen to have them outside their house (you can understand why)
  • It would be appreciated if dogowners could clear up after their dogs !
  • Horseriders can’t be expected to clear up after their horses – and dog fouling laws don’t affect horses. But please make fellow riders aware that the houses in the narrowest part of Kelso Close have their front doors almost on the street – and there are some small children living there.
  • Are there any allotment holders who fancy visiting Kelso Close to collect some free manure sometimes?

  • Hi Chris,
Speaking as a dog owner and resident of Kelso Close it is a big problem. We’ve owned a dog for five years and never once left any mess. We also offer a bag to anyone whose dog messes and doesn’t pick up, both in Sweyne Park and en route. The horse mess certainly is a much bigger problem in the Close and the council have been unable and certainly unwilling to do anything when I’ve contacted them. Perhaps there could be a dog mess bin near the entrance to Imperial Industrial Estate to complement the one by the ASDA sign? That might help?

  • On Rawreth Lane outside Imperial Park would be a suitable location for a bin – it’s not next to anyone’s front door or front garden.

Though walking through Kelso Close this afternoon there wasn’t any mess to be seen….

  • Hi Chris, yes, rarely see dog waste in the Close. I think we have a fox as I’ve heard squeals overnight, and the waste looks very similar. They also have a tendency to go over and over in the same location, unlike dogs.
