A Mess Indeed

One of our neighbouring Tory MPs, David Amess, has been the subject of an article in the Mail on Sunday today.

We’ll let the Mail article speak for itself:

A senior MP on an official parliamentary trip was almost barred from a flight to the United States after telling check-in staff that Osama Bin Laden had packed his bags.

Tory David Amess was allowed to travel on the Virgin Atlantic plane from Heathrow to Washington only after security officials confronted him and the captain had been asked whether he would let the MP on board.

The flight also ended in chaotic scenes when Mr Amess was humiliatingly taken off the plane in a wheelchair after being violently sick.

He then vomited in front of US immigration staff at Washington Dulles airport, was unable to board a connecting flight with fellow MPs to Nashville, Tennessee, and had to be tracked down by the US Secret Service because his colleagues did not know where he was.

The bizarre affair is disclosed in leaked letters revealing how Mr Amess complained to Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson that he had been treated ?absolutely disgracefully?.

?I was humiliated and became a public spectacle with no dignity by being allowed to be sick publicly in front of scores of people,? he wrote.

Mr Amess described how he ended up stranded on his own in a hotel foyer near the airport.

?Although I didn?t know it at the time, I was left in the foyer of the Crowne Plaza. I collapsed on a chair. The people on the reception desk must have thought I was either drunk or on drugs.

Virgin Atlantic replied to Mr Amess saying:

“…Your comment at check-in that Osama bin Laden had packed your bags was unwise in the current circumnstances…”
