10 Statistics You Didn’t Know About Our District

The NHS have today published their set of “2011 Health Profiles” for each district in the country, including ours.

There are some interesting figures (well, interesting if you like looking at this sort of stuff).

The overall webpage for the Health Profiles is here , and you can download the full profile for Rochford District from this page.

Here’s 10 statistics we’ve picked out for our district:

  • 1. We are generally healthier than most of England, and live longer than average. For example, a baby girl growing up here has a life expectancy of 84 years. Though in the ‘best’ district in England, life expectancy is 89 years.
  • 2. 15 percent of our Year 6 children are classified as ‘obese’ Shockingly , that’s still better than average for England.
  • 3. 25 percent of our adults are classified as ‘obese’ and that is worse than average.
  • 4. Deprivation is lower here than average. Even so, 10 percent of children – that’s nearly 1,800 individual children – are classified as living in poverty. (That indicates living in a family getting means tested benefits or on a low income).
  • 5.On the plus side, we are one of the safest areas in the country regarding violent crime. in 2009/10, there were only 4.8 reported violent crimes against the person for every 1,000 people. Mind you, that still adds up to 397 crimes.
  • 6. Also on the plus side, we are also one of the best districts in the country for not smoking . apparently only 12 percent of adults smoke.
  • 7. We have 3,595 persons diagnosed with diabetes in our district. That’s a healthier percentage than for most of England
  • 8.We have 223 persons who are ‘problem drug uses’ with opiates or crack. That’s also better than in most of the country.
  • 9. One of the worst results for Rochford is on skin cancer – malignant melanoma levels here are worse than the average for England.
  • 10. But the worst statistic for our district is on inactive children. Barely 50 percent of year 1-13 pupils spent at least 3 hours per week on high quality PE and school sport in 2009/10. That puts us in the bottom quarter of districts on this.
  • About the author, admin

  • By the number of kids I see with cans of fizzy drinks we will also be the district with the biggest percentage of people with no teeth in a few years time…..and if your child is one of them please ask them to bring the can home and not throw it in the ditch by the park and Downhall Park Way.

  • You may also be interested to read this – my daughter found this on Wikipedia when doing some research for her college work!!

“”parks should avoided in the evening, especially Sweyne Park in Rayleigh, which has been well known for gangs to steal mobile phones, take drugs and mug people in late evening, but also tend to steal mobile phones in broad daylight. If you see a gang of yobs who look like they’re up to no good and just want to bother you, avoid them!.

    `CCR

  • CCR – is this the same web site that published this ” Since May 2008, Rochford District Council has had 3 Conservative members, 501 Liberal Democrats (all of whom represent wards in west Rayleigh) and 1075 Rochford Residents Party councillor. Rayleigh Town council is also Conservative controlled, comprising 1 Conservative, 243 independents and 29 Liberal Democrats.

Is the report about the park confirmed by the Essex Police site ? If not then I suggest that this post is not very helpful for the local residents or the town.

  • I have just read on the Echo site that a girl aged between 13 – 15 was raped in Sweyne park last Thursday (3rd June)afternoon. Is this correct? If so, then I am sorry to say RR but CCR looks like they may have been right with their post and I’m guessing this maybe the “and a fear more bad news to come…” that admin refers to.

  • RR1, you are basically right, we’d heard something about this on Friday but didn’t know any details.

Whether the stuff on Wikipedia is accurate is a slightly different question.

  • This is indeed a shocking headline and something that is, thankfully, very rare in this part of the world. However we do not know the facts as yet and it would be wise to draw conclusions after the trial. I still maintain that the post about the park on Wikipedia is complete nonsense.
