A LEISURE centre could be closed by autumn after no one stepped forward to take it over.

The axe has been hanging over Great Wakering Sports Centre since January, following Rochford District Council?s decision to scrap its ?80,000 annual funding.

The authority hoped a consortium of volunteers would agree to take responsibility for the running costs and keep the centre open.

But a lack of interest has led it to start drawing up plans for a final closure on October 1.
