A Tale Of Two Restaurants

There are two planning applications for restaurants in Rayleigh High Street. One is recommended for approval, one for refusal.

The first one is at 131 High Street, next door to Pancho’s Cantina. The unit is currently vacant, but was an Oxfam shop till last September. Officers are recommending approval.

The second one is for an extension of the Old White Horse to accommodate a restaurant. Officers are recommending refusal for the following reason. It’s basically because they want more information:

REFUSE
1 The proposal, by virtue of the removal of three walls at first floor level, may lead to substantial harm to this listed building. Insufficient information has been provided to explain whether the three walls proposed for removal are original walls, or in original positions or to provide justification for the removal of the walls to facilitate the proposed use that may outweigh harm to the listed building which is a requirement of the National Planning Policy Framework. Without such information, it is possible that the removal of these walls could be detrimental to the integrity and character of this Grade II listed building.
