Just after saying last week that the burglary rate in Rayleigh was low, a couple of crimes are in the local press – in Rawreth Lane and Eastwood Road.

A HEARTBROKEN woman had 75 pieces of valuable jewellery stolen during a burglary.
The collection, including necklaces, watches and her parents? wedding rings, worth tens of thousands of pounds, was snatched from her house in Rawreth Lane, Rayleigh, after thieves forced open her front door.
House-to-house inquiries and forensic evidence haven?t thrown up a single clue. ….

POLICE in Rayleigh are appealing for vigilance after a man and two children distracted an 89-year-old man and stole a four-figure sum from him.
The suspect knocked at the door of an address close to Eastwood Road in Rayleigh on the afternoon of Tuesday, 1 February. The suspect told the man there was something wrong with his roof.
The suspect was accompanied by two children. The man agreed for the work to be done and money was given to the bogus caller. The victim later found that more money had been stolen while he was being distracted. In total a four-figure sum was taken. …..

Looking on the bright side, it’s good that the rate of burglaries in Rayleigh is low enough so that one is still newsworthy, but even so…
