Two Cheers for Labour

Our District Council has always been treated badly by central government – at least since the 1980s. Whether we’ve had Mrs Thatcher, John Major or Tony Blair as Prime Minister, we’ve always received less government grant per head of population than other councils in Essex. It’s not really clear why, except that we’re not terribly urban, we’re not terribly rural and we have a very high percentage of owner-occupiers

However next year is going to be better – we’re going to get ?350,000 more than the council officers were expecting. That means we should have slightly improved services, and no increase in car parking charges. So lets have two cheers for the government (they are doing too much harm to local democracy in other ways to get three cheers)and a bit less moaning from the Conservative Group!
