From the Herts and Essex Observer:

THE Metropolitan Police is investigating expenses paid to some members of Essex Police Authority this week.
_
Essex Police Authority logoA spokesman for Scotland Yard said: ?I can confirm that the Metropolitan Police Service is assisting Essex Police Authority with an investigation, but I?m not prepared to discuss it further.?
_
The authority was similarly tight-lipped: ?The Essex Police Authority instructed its auditors to investigate expense overpayments to some members and the handling of those overpayments. In light of the auditors? findings and on the advice of the chief constable of Essex Police, the authority felt it appropriate to ask the Metropolitan Police Service to conduct an investigation into the auditors? findings. They have agreed and the investigation is ongoing. It will be understood that whilst police investigations are continuing no further statements can be made.”
_
The authority describes itself as an independent organisation whose job it is to support, oversee and challenge the work of the county?s police.
_
It has 17 members including appointed Essex county councillors and independent members of the public.
