One good thing approved at Tuesday’s Full District Council was the reintroduction of a new “local list”.

These are buildings or items of street furniture not considered valuable enough to get national “Listed” status but will be shown on a new local list. This will give them some protection from being demolished or diminished. There are over100 items.

You can download the list here (8 Mb)
Examples of things included are:

Moons Cottage in Ashingdon (early 18th century)
The Shepherd and Dog Pub at Ballards Gore
“Telfords” in Battlesbridge (Victorian Villa)
The Chequers Pub in Canewdon
The telephone box opposite 15 Church End , Foulness. (Dates from 1935)
Methodist Chapel in Great Wakering
The White Hart Pub in Hawkwell
The trough and fountain at the junction of High Road and Fountains Lane, Hockley
Shell Cottage in Hullbridge (dates from 1738)
The vicarage in Little WakeringC
The “Tin Chapel” in Paglesham
Rawreth Hall, Rawreth
The Public Toilets in Rayleigh
The Paul Pry Pub In Rayleigh
The Freight House in Rochford

How many of these buildings have you seen?

  • How can a public toilet be protected? If this refers to Crown Hill I find this amazing. The building needs demolishing and replacing with a better more modern facility not preserving. At what point does a building / feature start being and eyesore / embarrassment rather than an object of interest to a few?
