It’s been a while since we’ve looked at local crime figures from the www.police.uk website.
So lets compare Rayleigh figures for January and June this year with the same figures last year. (We’ll look at some more parts of the district later on).

You can see that there’s been a moderate increase in crime in the last 18 months or so. After a spurt in burglaries last January, here’s a bit of a decline now. Anti-social behaviour this June was well down compared with June 2011 (maybe the wet weather helped).

  • I’ve noticed that most of the lamp posts on our estate and into Rawreth Lane have had what looks like little plastic ice cream cones stuck on top of them. I assume it happened while we were away, because we didn’t notice any cherry pickers roaming the estate.

Do we know what this is in aid of? The plastic cones appear to have replaced the old light sensors that controlled when the street lights come on, so I was wondering if this could be a step towards switching off the street lights at certain times of night, the pointy bit of the cone certainly looks like it may contain an antenna to receive a remote ON/OFF signal.

  • ST1 , I think you are right -this has been done in other parts of Essex.

Can’t find anything on the County Council website, but I spoke to someone at Rochford District last night about it, he thought this was what you’ve suggested it is.

  • It appears this is what they are for. During installation in Alexandra Road there was a test that was witnessed where all the lights where turned on at the same time in a road by the installer doing something with a box he had.
