The Taxpayers Alliance is an organisation that seems to look for any government overspending with the zeal of the Spanish Inquisition. They have just produced a report on the amount of money councils spend on publicity. They have titled it ‘Burning Our Money’, which shows pretty clearly how they view things.
According to their figures:
Essex County Council :
Spent ?2,455,000 on publicity in 1996-1997
Spent ?4,332,000 on publicity in 2006-2007
That’s an increase of 76.5%
This year’s figure is the 12th highest in the country
But the county has the third highest population in the country.
Rochford District Council:
Spent ?33,652 on publicity in 1996-1997
Spent ?142,000 on publicity in 2006-2007
That’s an increase of 322.0%
This year’s figure is ranked 380th out of all councils
Rochford District has the 374th highest population

Surely it would be worse if Councils just took our money and did not inform us of thier activites and services. Even with the current level of publicity people still are often unaware of thier council, councillors and services and activities. Without spending money on publicity that would be even more so.
I think that you provide the area with a good service with this site. May I ask how many hits it gets.
I agree with Angelina; a council needs to communicate with its residents.
Angelina, my target is 10,000 hits a month – but we haven’t got there yet!
