The brook that goes under Church Road, Rawreth, yesterday. At the time of the picture – just after high water – it was swollen but thankfully not flooding the road.

  • Given the most recent rain was persistent ( rather than extraordinary ) this shows just how close to ‘capacity’ the system downstream of the proposed “large development”is.

I / we ( and I suspect RDC ) do not have the technical ability to analyse the flood prevention measures proposed for the North of London Road – so the responsibility rests firmly with Countryside. If not already in place I would suggest Rawreth Parish Council get the current situation independently / professionally appraised and formerly recorded – so that come the future issues they can legally hold Countryside to account. Don’t forget that the most recent ‘modern design’ is the Eon site – which has
already been overwhelmed by the same Brook.

  • As Jim has said we are not having rain that is anything out of the ordinary for the time of year, yet none of the drains. gullies, ditches etc. seem able to cope. This goes way beyond whether or not there should be development. It is the result of years if not decades of lack of maintenance by land owners/water companies/environment agency/council. Patch it up every now and then if things get too bad, but don’t dredge, dig out, widen, unblock, inspect, maintain regularly. All in the name of money.

  • Just watching the BBC News – covering the “political spend” on the Somerset levels,
finished with a shot of a sheet piling barrier being installed about 100metres from newly built homes. Closing statement from a local farmer ‘ why would you build houses anywhere near a designated flood risk’ …………………

  • Jim, don’t worry about that, this is the real flood ( taken from the BBC news site ) still once Farage is in charge all will be well…can you really believe that some of these things are true…???? I would normally make a remark about Cleggy but I have lost the will to live after reading this lot…..

BBC political editor Nick Robinson said Mr Cameron’s welfare curbs were “a tougher version of an approach already set out by Labour and the Liberal Democrats”.

The main proposals in the speech – which are dependent on Mr Cameron remaining in power after May’s general election – are:

    • Stopping EU migrants from claiming in-work benefits, such as tax credits, and getting access to social housing for four years

    • Stopping migrants claiming child benefit for dependents living outside the UK

    • Removing migrants from the UK after six months if they have not found work

    • Restricting the right of migrants to bring non-EU family members into the UK

    • Stopping EU jobseekers claiming Universal Credit

    • Speeding up deportation of convicted criminals

    • Longer re-entry bans for beggars and fraudsters removed from the UK

    • Stopping citizens from new EU entrants working in the UK until their economies have “converged more closely”.

    • Extra money for communities with high levels of migrants

  • Understood – but those measures only apply to the known flow, none of the governments of the last 3 decades have any idea of the real number ( illegal entries ).
It is ( in some way ) proportional to the known figures , but I take no comfort from that as the latest figures shown the flow has ( again ) increased – despite all the words.

Whilst I believe your Nigel will cause some significant shocks in the next general election ( and have a greater number of MP’s than expected ) it won’t be enough to
form the government – but it is shaking up the establishment ,which is a positive.

  • Oz @ 6 above. I am not cynical but re your post: I don’t believe in fairies but I do believe we are in an election year that might have prompted the said decisions and that the Human Rights brigade have just sharpened their pencils ready to step up and defend every single person who is subject to the ‘rules’ being suggested. using our legal aid provisions, of course. In the vanguard will be all the usual hand-wringing do-gooders as well. They will be complete with sad pictures of the hungry, tortured, enslaved etc. etc. We wont see too many images of imported child sex gang members or street robbers and beggars.
