We’ve now received the following speed check results from the County Council:

“… data recorded in Downhall Park Way Rayleigh, at a point 10 metres west of Bristol Close.

The loops were laid on Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st March 2007….

Northbound traffic is heading towards Rawreth Lane, Southbound away from Rawreth Lane.

Tuesday 20 March 2007

Northbound
Over the 24 hour period 155 vehicle movements were recorded, the average speed over this period was 16.5mph and the 85th percentile speed was 19.7mph

Southbound
Over the 24 hour period 226 vehicle movements were recorded, the average speed over this period was 18mph and the 85th percentile speed was 21.5mph.

Wednesday 21 March 2007

Northbound
Over the 24 hour period 158 vehicle movements were recorded, the average speed over this period was 16.9mph and the 85th percentile speed was 20.6mph.

Southbound
Over the 24 hour period 235 vehicle movements were recorded, the average speed over this period was 19.3 mph and the 85th percentile speed was 24.2 mph.

The results show figures that would be expected for this class of road, and well within the 30mph speed restriction currently imposed. “

These speeds are a lot lower than we expected….

Any comments?

  • Having lived in DPW for 15 years I have seen a steady increase in speed over the years and this survey is, in my opinion flawed. The loops should have been positioned at a point close the junction with Norwich, that is where speed is at it’s highest. People are slowing from 40+ to take the bend at the location of these loops.

I dispute that meaningful data can be gathered over 48 hours, I suggest a week would give a far more representative picture.

Anybody on the estate will tell you who are the main culprits, the 6-10 airheads that live on the estate, the local taxi firm and the supermarket delivery vans.

    It’s not rocket science.
