Last night Rayleigh Town Council voted unanimously to trial private security for the town centre up until Christmas. Full details of the private security companies duties are still to be worked out, but they will be deployed for Wednesday and Saturdays market days. There have been some anecdotal reports of theft from market stalls and pickpocketing in the town centre.

Our Lib Dem group requested some crime statistics however detailed reports of reported crime were unavailable. This led to reservations about this decision but we supported the short trial period to gain a better understanding of whether there is a problem with crime in our High St or whether this undertaking by the Council is not warranted.

We have queried with Essex Police as to whether the increase in 2018’s Council tax precept for Essex Police had netted any gains for the Community Policing Team here in Rochford District. We’ve received the reply from Essex Police

……the first being about whether CPT have benefited from the additional officer’s as per the PFCC’s comments. These officers are still undertaking their initial training and I believe they are due to start on CPT at the beginning of 2019. I am told we will get an extra 4 officer’s across the Castle Point and Rochford area on CPT, so I am confident that these extra officers will benefit the team when they arrive.

Private security will operate on Wednesday’s and Saturday’s (9am to 5pm) up until Christmas.
