Police Update

A couple of interesting issues were discussed with the police last night at the West Community Forum.

First of all, Town Councillor Dave Sperring asked about neighbourhood policing. Chief Inspector Westley replied that neighbourhood policing had been disrupted first of all by the London riots, then by Dale Farm, then by the new blueprint for policing in Essex. but he had managed to get 4 of the officers back, and was trying to get more.

Once the new blueprint comes into effect, there will be no ‘response teams’ based in the district – they will reporting to hubs based in Laindon and Southend. This was described as regrettable. But in Rochford and Castle Point there will be 22 neighbourhood officers, plus some community officers and about 20 PCSOs.

Secondly, our Lib Dem colleague Chris Lumley asked if there had been an increase in burglaries in our district. The answer was yes – domestic burglaries were more numerous than last year. But various police operations had been carried out to deal with this, and the figures were improving. In fact one man was arrested for burglary in the early hours of Tuesday morning (not during an actual burglary, that’s just when he was located).

  • I had reason to contact the Essex Police twice on their non-urgent 101 telephone number during the last couple of months. Having just received my telephone bill I was astounded to find that I had been charged 15p for each call. To make things worse, the second call required me to leave a message for the Rayleigh Area Officer to respond to. I heard nothing, not even an acknowledgement.
Do these charges surprise any others out there?
