BBC News reports on the success of the newly elected MP for Chesham and Amersham and the fantastic result.

The Liberal Democrats have pulled off a stunning by-election victory, overturning a 16,000 majority in a seat that has always voted Conservative.

Leader Ed Davey celebrated by knocking over a wall of blue bricks, claiming his party was now the “main threat” to the Tories in many areas.

The party’s candidate Sarah Green won by 8,028 votes from the Tories, with the Green Party in third place.

Labour had the worst by-election result in the party’s history, with 622 votes.

The result is a major boost for the Liberal Democrats after their poor performance at the 2019 general election and brings their total number of MPs at Westminster to 12.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson described the result for his party as “disappointing”.

Locally this demonstrates that big majorities can be overturned and demonstrated in the recent local elections with Cllr Craig Cannell winning the Essex County Council seat for Rayleigh North division and very near misses elsewhere by the Lib Dems. If residents want change, we are here to give them the change they are asking for.

  • A great win and as mentioned by BBC, they and most of the media were totally wrong footed. They ignored this by-election but reported in advance about the up and coming Batley and Spen by-election. Now it has all changed and both red and blue walls are crumbling! Hopefully Lib Dems will now be given some lon overdue air time. It’s not all about Labour and the Tories. Places like Rayleigh proved that in the recent local elections and will keep on serving real people not just party machines.
