Is Our Recycling Scheme Just Rubbish?

We recently came across this piece published in ‘The Independent’ on how ‘Sweden’s recycling is so revolutionary, the country has run out of rubbish’

The UK has made strides in the proportion of waste recycled under an EU target of 50 per cent by 2020. This has underpinned hundreds of millions of pounds of investment into recycling facilities and energy recovery plants in the UK, creating many jobs. We’re not quite at that target yet. Recycling in the UK peaked at around 45 per cent of all waste in 2014.

Let’s all hope that post the elusive Brexit, that the UK Government, whatever colour they wear, commit to doing more on investing in the infrastructure to enable us to recycle more and make better use of our waste product.

Closer to home, Rochford District Council is currently reviewing their own waste contract so it will be interesting to see if they can improve on current recycling rates in our District.
