We are greatly saddened to hear of the untimely death this morning of former district councillor Maureen Vince, following a massive stroke.
Maureen was an enormously respected and well-liked figure in Rochford. Amongst other activities she served with distinction on the District Council, representing the town of Rochford itself, and was for some years the leader of the Labour group.
She was very well regarded across the political spectrum, and when the Labour party became unpopular nationally, other Labour councillors gradually lost their seats until she was the only Labour councillor left.
When Maureen faced re-election herself, if she had switched parties, or stood as an independent, she would have surely held her seat easily, but she preferred to stick to her principles and as a result lost by a fairly narrow margin.
However she remained on Rochford Parish Council, representing the Roche ward.
We know that many people have been devastated by the news of her death. Maureen, you were a fantastic person to know.
Sad news indeed. As the Labour Group dwindled she ended up having her prescribed seat in the Chamber next to me and it was so nice to have that pre-meeting and post meeting chat before we broke up and went home. Maureen worked so hard for Rochford District in many ways and not just in representative politics. Missed.
John
Very Sorry to hear this. Maureen worked very hard for Rochford in so many ways.
Rest in Peace Maureen.
