From the County Council:

Essex County Council is launching a ?1million Life Raft Trust to support Essex cultural, heritage and tourist attractions that find themselves in difficulty due to the economic downturn.

The county?s tourist attractions have a large part to play in improving the quality of life for people in Essex, providing activities during leisure time, educational opportunities for children and young people and employment for many Essex residents.

The Life Raft Trust will support Essex attractions which can prove they have suffered a loss in income due to the economic downturn and can demonstrate that this has critically affected their contribution to the people and economy of Essex. Grants will be available up to ?50,000.

County Councillor Jeremy Lucas, Essex County Council cabinet member for heritage, culture and the arts said: ?The Life Raft Trust is just one of the ways that we are supporting Essex businesses. Tourist attractions have a great role to play in the Essex economy and we should be doing all we can to help keep them open and profitable. For those that may currently be struggling, the Life Raft Trust will, we hope, help ease financial burdens and provide enough security to ensure that our attractions can continue to welcome visitors throughout this difficult period.?

Interested attractions have until Monday 5 October 2009 to submit their application for a grant. Only one grant will be awarded per organisation.
