On Friday, 15th April, 2011, the Chairman (Cllr Veronica Randall) and members of the Hockley Parish Council will be hosting two Russian visitors from the city of Orenburg: Dr Igor Khramov, President, The Orenburg Charity Foundation ?Eurasia? and Oleg Vasilyev the Foundation?s representative in Moscow.

The visitors are coming to the UK to launch a book at the London Book Fair on the life of Alexander Zass, known as the Great Samson, The Strongest Man in the World, a former resident of Orenburg who spent his retirement years in Hockley and is buried in the churchyard of Ss Peter and Paul.

A programme of events has been organised by the Parish Council:
.
* 11 am Visit to Zass?s grave in the churchyard of Ss Peter and Paul
* 12 am Lunch with the Hockley Chamber of Trade and Commerce
* 1.30 pm Visit to the Greensward Academy
* 5.00 pm Buffet reception at Kilnwood House, Station Approach. Amongst the guests will be Cllr Simon Smith, Vice Chairman of Rochford District Council
* 7.00 pm Talk by the visitors on the life of Alexander Zass and the Orenburg ?Zass Project?. The talk is open to the public and free of charge.

Zass was born in Vilna, Poland in 1888, but lived most of his early years in Russia and after 1924 in Britain. He lifted a 500 pound girder with his teeth, carried a small horse, caught a woman fired from a cannon and allowed professional boxers to hit him in the stomach, but his greatest talents were in bending steel bars and breaking chains which were the center piece of his music hall exhibitions. ….
