Gritting Volunteers Needed In Rayleigh.

The various Lib Dem councillors are getting an increasing flow of complaints – face to face, by phone call, email , facebook or onlinefous comment – about the state of the roads and footways. Understandably.

One frequent comment is about emplty salt bins.

Well, the County Council, in their wisdom, have decided not to fill salt bins- apparently this is because some of the salt was being used by private individuals to look after their own paths and driveways.

So they are trying out a different approach – for example for Rayleigh they have provided a 1 tonne bag of salt for volunteers to use, under the direction of Rayleigh Town Council. We believe the County Council is willing to give gritters some training, but they are not providing any transport to the Town Council to easily move some of it to each part of the town.

One tonne works out at roughly 33 grammes (just over an ounce) per inhabitant of Rayleigh…. which seems pretty derisory. However , if there are say, only 10 volunteers, that’s quite a lot per person….

Hopefully the County Council will provide a more reasonable amount if there are enough volunteers. If you are interested in helping, contact Rayleigh Town Council on 01268 741880 or via rayleigh.towncouncil@btinternet.com .
