Grappling With Grants

The grants applications fill up a pretty big envelope...

The District Council gives out grants each year to various charities and voluntary organisations. It’s never been an easy process, and isn’t likely to be easy this year either. There’s never enough money to go round….

This is how it works:

  • Full Council decides the overall amount of money to be given out in grants.
  • A small panel of councillors then spend an evening (December 14th) discussing the applications, and make recommendations on who gets what. The panel is mostly Tory, with Chris Black and Michael Hoy added to help try to achieve a consensus.
  • The panel’s recommendations then go to the appropriate cabinet member, and she then makes the decisions.
Her decisions could possibly be called in to Full Counil again if 3 members are unhappy with them.
  • For now, the members of the panel have to read through all the applications (see the picture above – they fill quite a big envelope)
