Colchester Lib Dem Nick Barlow writes here about the overlap of politics and Doctor Who:
YouGov have done a survey asking people their opinions about Doctor Who and what characteristics they want to see in the next Doctor….. It?s perhaps not surprising that Lib Dem voters are more likely to be Who fans than supporters of other parties … but it?s nice to see it statistically confirmed ? 41% of Lib Dem supporters are interested in the series, compared to 34% of Labour, 29% of Tories and just 26% of UKIP supporters.
There?s also interest in the questions about what characteristics the new Doctor should have. Even without the breakdown by party, I?m surprised to see that the population of Britain are relatively open to the idea of a different Doctor. The only characteristics that get bare majority support are British (54%) and male (52%) ? and male only gets about 40% support from Labour and Lib Dem voters. That gives me hope that when ? and I believe it is a question of ?when?, not ?if?, even if it?s not this time ? we get a female Doctor, the general populace will be much more inclined to accept it and see how it goes than certain Who fans believe they will be.
Good to see that the money used to fund the YouGov scheme is being spent wisely. If this crock is the sort of survey they think is worthwhile then they should be disbanded immediately. I don’t know which is worse, the survey or the programme, they are both a complete load of tosh.
Yougov are a private firm , who do opinion polling using a pool of 35000 volunteers, so despite the name they are not a government organisation!
Chris,
Fairenoughski but It’s still a waste of time either way. If you can make money doing this type of survey then I’m in the wrong job.
Certainly the standard of writing has fallen recently. Would recommend the series with John Sims as the master. Utopia, The Sound of Drums and the Last of the time lords.
At the risk of causing a Lib Dem split 😉 I don’t think there’s been THAT much change in the quality of the writing. The Bells of St John from the latest series is one of my all-time favourites.
Regarding the survey, Yougov rely on a panel of volunteers or their responses rather than stopping people in the street or phoning them at home. Having a few fun surveys like this probably helps keeping them interested. It also generates publicity for the company.
A lot of Lib Dem activists I know under 55 are very keen on Dr Who (and at least one Rochford Tory councillor)
I’d been interested to know what armed forces personnel make of Dr Who; in some ways he’s the ultimate nonconformist, but there’s a been a lot of military characters in Doctor Who, shown in a positive light, eg the Brigadier, Colonel Mace, and Father Octavian
For fear of being labelled an anorak are you refering to the first one in the series with the young girl singing across to what appeared another planet. If yes it was the best of what I would view as a weaker series.
No – it was the one with Celia Imrie with people being uploaded… I thought there was some cracking acting in that one and a good twist…
Bruce – far too late for you I am afraid……we are talking here about the fur lined, gold zipped Anorak with pearl buttons….and a built in TV to watch episodes of Dr Who.
