The County Council are increasing their Council Tax by 4 1/2 percent, above the rate of inflation.

Residents also get charged council tax by the District Council, Parish Councils and the Fire and Police Authorities. But the bulk of what we pay goes to the County Council , so this is the ‘big one’ – what the other authorities charge isn’t so significant.

Tom Smith-Hughes, who is the leader of the Lib Demgroup on the County Council said:

“This increase will hurt large numbers of people across Essex, but we are particularly concerned about the financial burden on those people on pensions and fixed low incomes. The council tax is a particularly unfair tax not linked to the ability to pay, which hits the elderly, vulnerable and disadvantaged people the hardest. It should be scrapped.”
