Last night, opposition members voted to refuse the plans to proceed to move forward with the building of new Council offices, whilst selling off the existing public assets.

In their heartfelt pleas, they urged members of the Council to defer the decision to move forward with the project in the current uncertain economic climate.

However, despite all the efforts of the main opposition groups (Lib Dems, Rochford District Residents & Greens), the Conservative group remained steadfast that the project was still ‘relevant’ despite changes to working practices and warnings from industry experts that many similar projects had now been delayed until there was more certainty. The continued to vote to approve the officer’s recommendations. Both independent opposition members (Cllr Burton & Cllr Wilkinson) from the Wheatley ward were absent from the meeting.

  • Yes it is a bit galling that both my Wheatley Ward ‘Independent’ Councillors didn’t tune into this important meeting – they didn’t even need to go to a physical meeting! Good grief the local facilities under threat are in their ward!! But this isn’t the end of the road. It is not a done deal. If anyone wants to stop this obscene waste of money and destruction of Rayleigh’s facilities please email me at stephent53@hotmail.com (or contact onlinefocus ). Let’s get stuck in!
