The blue and turquoise areas have more people without qualifications

There’s a report just out from the University and College Union about the number of people between 16 and 64 in Britain without any qualifications.

They’ve worked out that 1 person in 9 doesn’t have any qualifications at all. Moreover, there are big differences in different parts of Britain.

They have calculated figures for each of the 632 constituencies.

Glasgow North East comes out worst – 35 percent of people not having any qualifications.
Brent North comes top – with only 1.9 percent.

The Guardian have also put the figures on their website here, and we can have a look to see how our local constituencies compare.

The answer is, not very well. Rayleigh and Wickford is the 278th worst out of 632 consituencies. 11.7 percent of people are without qualifications. We come out level with places like Scunthorpe and Morecambe.

Rochford and Southend East is even worse – coming in a poor 48th worst with 18.8 percent.

Now, these are figures for adults – not our current crop of schooleavers. So they certainly aren’t a direct reflection on our schools. And quite a lot of people grew up in East London, didn’t get much in the way of qualifications, but have worked hard, done reasonably well for themselves and then moved down here.

But even so, these figures aren’t very inspiring….
