Broken Glass

Some thoughts from our fellow councillor Chris Lumley:

I have been getting complaints from various people about the amount of broken glass and empty beer cans that are on pavements, grass verges and in some cases roads. This is not just a ward complaint but as June and I are involved in various organisations serving Rayleigh we pick up complaints from all over the town.

So this is a general problem but one that generally occurs in the areas near public houses. Many people say they see drinkers leaving these premises still with glasses and bottles in their hands and when the container is empty they just throw it away ! A suggestion is that pubs should stop customers leaving the premises with glasses or bottles, ( I suspect beer cans are also a problem but not so dangerous). I suppose notices to this effect could be displayed, but as we are a licensing authority I wonder something we could do when issuing a licence?

Any thoughts from anyone else on this?

  • Just visit Sweyne Park on a Saturday or Sunday morning to see how many broken/unbroken bottles plus cans that are lying around and then you may see another problem! They are usually accompanied with ASDA bags.
