From the District Council website yesterday:

Bin collection update

Posted on 07 January 2010 by admin

All bin collections have been suspended throughout the District due to dangerous icy conditions on all side roads and pavements.

Further updates to bin collections will be posted to this site as the situation progresses.

UPDATE: 1230 hrs FRIDAY:

The District Council now advise:

Despite the weather, the Friday collections will take place as normal today. Residents who have their bins collected on a Friday are asked to present their food waste bin (yellow lid) and their non-recyclables bin (purple lid) for collection.

We are also trying to catch up on Wednesday?s and Thursday?s missed collections today and will have extra vehicles in use.

Can the small number of residents who had their collections missed on Wednesday present their food waste bin (yellow lid) only for collection.

Can residents who have their bins collected on a Thursday present their food waste bin (yellow lid) only for collection. We will attempt to collect these all today.

Unfortunately we will not be able to collect the non-recyclables bin (purple lid) from those who missed their collection on Wednesday or Thursday.

Collections will be much slower than usual due to weather conditions.

  • Whilst that was said Brian as a householder who missed a collection on Thursday and was then due Friday and then Saturday we did not see anybody today, Saturday. The weather was obviously too bad. My household is now on 4 weeks + for compostables and now next week we will be on Week two for both recyclables and non recyclables. The best we can hope for is that we will get two of the three next week on the next normal day which must include compostables which is 5 weeks !!It is likely to put either recyclables or recyclables on to 3 weeks if the Council sticks to the “normal” day where one of the two is collected weekly. But that said the weather may preclude any collection at all next week. The weather effects of the last two bad spells and the incidence of bank holidays will have a knock on for some time to come I think.

  • Hi Mike,

Nothing on the district council website yet.

One problem is that collections were more or less back to normal last Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, but were disrupted/stopped by snow on Thursday and Friday. This means that’s there’s still a lot of waste to be collected from the eastern part of the district, from people who haven’t had their bins emptied for 3 or even 4 weeks.

So even if the weather is fine tomorrow, I don’t know if they will do a normal Monday collection or do some catching up elsewhere.

  • So should we leave our bins out in case? Not sure what to do here, maybe RDC should come out with a statement. I know it is Sunday but during this sort of inclement weather and surely once the Met office declared that the threat of extreme weather was not now in force and the thaw had begun should we not get told if plan B was in place? Maybe the Cabinet member for bin collections could enlighten us. I feel sorry for the residents who have not had their bins collected in weeks and they should be the first to get collections but it all seems such a mess.

  • The Black household will leave our bins out.

Ideally I would have liked to have seen something on the council website tonight – but what happens if the situation changes overnight and the council has to change its plans? It would just cause more confusion.

I’ve already phoned up the cabinet member tonight and interrupted his TV viewing! – comment no 5 is based on what he told me.

  • Thanks Chris, I was just basing my comments on comparing the cabinet member on your efforts, in going the extra mile, or two! I doubt that the weather will change, after looking at all the weather forecasts on the web!

All he had to say is that the bins will be collected in xxxxx and if the weather worsens, unexpectedly, collections will be suspended. Do we know if the Monday collections will be as normal for this Monday?

  • If it is any help, I telephoned RDC this morning (11/01)and spoke to Sita. They told me that bin collections would be as normal and to present my bin as usual. Should the weather change and they cannot get to me I should continue to present my bin.

    I hope this helps?

  • As far as I can see there has been no bin collection in Navestock Close for the usual Monday collection? Seems the information given to Chris was different to that given to Christine, as I said left hand and right hand!
