Council warning over online payment scam

Rochford District Council has received telephone calls from residents who have received an email saying that their Council Tax payments made on line has been declined or that an error has occurred during the processing of the payment.
_
The email then asks them to click on a link to re-enter their bank details so the Council Tax payment can be made.
_
The Council is asking residents who receive these emails to not click on the link, or re-enter their bank details under any circumstances.
_

These emails do not come from Rochford District Council, they are a sophisticated scam where the sender of the email is trying to get hold of your bank details.
_
If you do pay your Council Tax bill online through the Rochford District Council website at www.rochford.gov.uk and there is an error during the payment processing you will be notified straightaway on the screen.
_
Similarly, when you have completed your Council Tax payment online, you will see a message on the screen along with a unique authorisation code which confirms that your payment has been made successfully.
_
If you want to check anything then you can contact the Council?s Revenues and Benefits Team on or .
