Asda Licensing Application

We’ve had a few people contact us about a licensing application from Asda in Priory Chase, Rayleigh. It is licensing application 12/00667/LAPREV and you can find it on the District Council website here.

The application is for :

Supply of Alcohol – Time period : Everyday, 06:00 to 00:00 (we assume this means until midnight)

Late Night Refreshments – Time period : Everyday, 23:00 to 00:00

As Ron is a member of the Licensing committee it wouldn’t be appropriate for us to write very much here. But – any thoughts from anyone?

28th October Update : here’s a photo of the notice outside Asda (click to enlarge)

  • Something is clearly wrong here as the notices outside Asda, posted by Rochford District Council, clearly state:-
    The proposed variation is:-

    1. To extend the hours for the sale by retail of alcohol and opening hours to 0600 hours to 2300 hours Monday to Sunday.

    2. To permit alterations to the premises in accordance with the plan submitted to the Licensing Authority.

There are three more paragraphs, of which states the third states:-

“It is an offence knowingly or wrecklessly to make a false statement in connection with an application punishable on summary conviction by a maximum fine of £5,000.”

Surely only one statement can be correct, otherwise a false statement of facts by Rochford District Council has been made.

  • Late opening on a Sunday? personally I feel 11pm is excessive, surely they will just open til 8pm even if they have the opportunity to open later? I’ve often thought shutting at 4pm on a Sunday is a little early and doesn’t fit with modern family living, but 4pm to 11pm is a bit of a variance!

  • Sean, good question, I have a definite answer now:

The original application was to extend the permitted licensing hours of 07.30 to 22.00hrs to 06.00 to 24.00 hours and then, to enable them to sell hot food between 23.00 to 24.00hrs, they wanted provision of late night refreshment added to the licence.

Since discussion with the police the application has been amended to the hours of 06.00 to 23.00 hours and with no late night refreshment as it is no longer required.
