A gold star for everyone involved in the Rayleigh Arts Festival today. There were some seriously good paintings on sale, some good local music to listen to, plus lots of arts and crafty things to buy or make.

The participants included:

  • Folk musicians from Folk By The Yard
  • The alternative rock group The Maheno Wreck. They are a local group who were performing live and giving away free copies of their sample CD. They might remind you of Snow Patrol or The Fray….
  • Southend-based photographer, artist and graphic designer Peter Bolton.
  • This is only the second year of the festival, and hopefully it will get bigger and better in the years to come – providing the District Council maintains its commitment. The cost is about 10p per resident of the town, and this kind of event can only help business and trade , as well as improving the ambience of the place.

Here’s a very serious suggestion – Skanska are in Rayleigh for many months to come, carrying out the gas repairs. They are just doing their job, but closing off town centre streets is going to harm trade. Wouldn’t it be good if Skanska could sponsor the festival next year?
